HEARTSTRINGS TUGGED

The sun was scorching hot when we headed to Marigondon Elementary School in Lapu-lapu City. Since November this year, we have been hopping from one elementary school to another to launch the feeding program of Century Pacific Group and somehow it has taken toll on our office works. We had to leave some paperworks and classes just to keep our appointments with the beneficiary schools.

On the way, I tried to craft the speech I wanted to give before the teachers and students. In between thoughts, I was distracted by my two student assistants, Gemmy and Asiscio, who were trading jokes at the backseat of L300.

Had there be some staff who can replace me, I wouldn’t bother going to Marigondon. Speeches give me goosebumps and long distance travels weary me easily.

When we reached Marigondon Elementary School, we were welcomed by its assistant principal Mrs. Cuizon who was very accommodating to us. I caught her preparing the food for the feeding program and giving instructions on the stage set-up. Though it was my first time in the school, I felt that I was part of the MES family. I was introduced to Mrs. Montayre, the PTA president and former councilor in Marigondon and Mr. Simbajon who was a principal from another school. The exchange of pleasantries was very cordial.

There were also parents present and some faculty members. About 450 pupils were presented to us who were identified as undernourished by Mrs. Cuizon. After a short program, the feeding was initiated by the teachers and parents who put in some prepared tuna on the plates of children.

It was heartwarming to see parents and teachers working together to nourish the children, but the sight could be heartbreaking since until now we have a score of severely wasted children whose academic performance and attendance were affected by the lack of proper nutrition.

After a hearty meal courtesy of Mrs. Montayre, I couldn’t believe that a program like this would change my perspective that as an employee of CITE, I can still do a lot of things for my community beyond my office works. I can extend my reach to those who have less and inspire others to be charitable even if I too have only less.
